While rumors float that Karina Figueroa might come back this year, earlier than anyone anticipated, the Long Beach State women’s basketball team continued to struggle on the offensive end and was unable to overcome a slow start Friday night, as it suffered a 76-44 loss at Nebraska.
The 49ers were led by Whitney Fields who had a team-high 12 points, with 10 coming in the second half. Lindsey Beckner finished the evening with a career-high 13 rebounds. Lauren Sims chipped in seven points for the 49ers, while Lynea Williams added six.
The Huskers (8-2) used a quick start to jump out to a 7-0 lead before Williams got The Beach on the board with a fast break layup at the 17:42 mark. Nebraska then went up by double digits with 15:04 on the clock and never looked back, taking its largest advantage at 45-16 heading into the break.
The 49ers struggled on offense in the early going with a season-low 16 first-half points while shooting just 22.9 percent from the field. The Huskers, meanwhile, owned a 59.4 field goal percentage and had three players in double figures at intermission.
Despite an improved shooting performance by the 49ers in the second period, they were unable to recover from a 29-point first half deficit and eventually fell, 76-44. LBSU shot 30 percent (21-for-70) from the field and was just 1-of-17 from three-point range.
Long Beach State will return to action when it closes out a four-game road swing at Arizona on Sunday, Dec. 14 @ 1 p.m.
