The Long Beach State women’s basketball team (16-15) has earned an at-large berth into the 2013 Postseason WNIT and will host Utah in a first-round game on Wednesday, March 20. The start time was announced on Tuesday as 7PM.
“It is an honor and absolute thrill to play in the postseason,” LBSU head coach Jody Wynn said. “We are thankful for the opportunity to play in the WNIT. It will be a terrific experience for our young team and we are looking forward to taking the court together again.”
Long Beach State is making its third WNIT appearance and first since 2000, when it advanced to the third round. The 49ers were also in the tournament back in 1978.
LBSU trails in its all-time series with Utah, 3-2. The Utes have won the last three, including a 74-46 victory in the most recent meeting on Dec. 29, 2007, in Long Beach.
Utah (18-13) finished sixth in the Pac-12 regular-season standings. The 49ers have fared well against the Pac-12 this year, defeating Washington and Arizona, and falling to then No. 1 Stanford.
Long Beach State, which finished fifth in conference play, is one of four Big West teams in the WNIT. Regular-season champion Pacific earned the automatic bid, while Hawai’i and UC Santa Barbara also received an at-large bid.
