In Tuesday’s final round of the Fresno State Lexus Classic at the Copper River Country Club, Long Beach State senior All-American Kay Hoey fired a one-under par 71 to finish in second place.  LBSU as a team finished in third place with a 32-over 896 (298-303-295), just five shots behind team champion UC Irvine (891) and four shots behind second place San Francisco (892).

Hoey committed just one double-bogey on the No. 4 hole while recording three birdies for the day. Hoey finished the tournament with a total of four-under 212, just three strokes shy of first place Miki Ueoka of Santa Clara

“I’m very proud of Kay and her comeback after the tournament in San Diego,” said head coach Sue Ewart. “It seems she is getting back on track as is the rest of the team.”

Freshman Lee Lopez made a strong comeback in Tuesday’s final round with a one-under 71 to move up in the standings to finish tied for 10th. Lopez carded a 76 and 75 on Monday for a three-round total of six-over 222.  Sophomore Reina Rogers remained tied for 29th as she finished the day with a six-over 78 (232) and junior Brenda Chhuor also remained tied for 38th with a 79 (235).

“The girls came out of the gate on fire yesterday morning and hung on to post a solid first round,” said Ewart. “As they continued the second round I think they got a little tired from dealing with the elements but they hung tough to stay in the race.”

Sophomore Lindsey McAtee continued to improve throughout the tournament as she moved up the standings by eight spots to tie for 42nd as she shot a 75 in the final round. McAtee recorded an 81 and 78 on Monday.

“With the sun shining today the girls played well despite some errant shots. To finish third is a huge success for the team and I’m excited about next week,” continued Ewart. “Pepperdine is a small field but contains three top ranked teams. It will be good to see how we stack up against them. I’m very excited about the rest of the season!”

The 49ers return to action Mar. 3-4, as they travel to the Wave Invitational at the Moorpark Country Club hosted by Pepperdine.
