After a rain delay postponed the tournament’s finish, the Long Beach State women’s golf team came back with a strong finish in the final round of the Aztec Spring Invitational as three 49ers finished in the top 20 on Tuesday afternoon at the Salt Creek Golf Course. The 49ers finished tied for sixth with East Tennessee State and tournament host San Diego State. LBSU recorded a 302 in Tuesday’s final round for a three-day total of 62-over 926.

LBSU freshman Lee Lopez sizzled in the final round of the Aztec Spring Invitational as she shot a two-under 70 to tie for second place at the Salt Creek Golf Course. Lopez recorded five birdies for the day as she finished just three strokes behind individual medalist Hillary Packard of UC Irvine. Two other players tied with Lopez for second place.

Junior Brenda Chhuor had her best tournament of the 2008-09 campaign as she finished tied for 16th with a 12-over 228. Chhuor shot a five-over 77 in Tuesday’s final round as she had three bogey’s and one double-bogey for the day.

All-American senior Kay Hoey recorded her best round of the tournament as carded a three-over 75 to finish tied for 19th. Hoey had two birdies for the day.

Sophomore Reina Rogers moved up three spots as she tied for 76th with an eight-over 80 to finish with a 249, while fellow classman Lindsey McAtee tied for 80th with an 11-over 83 for a score of 253.

“It’s great for Lee to tie for second as she played really steady today,” said 49er Head Coach Sue Ewart. “I was pretty happy to see Brenda come through with three consistent rounds. Kay had a better round today as Lindsey and Reina were disappointed with their results. All in all, it was a great tournament despite the weather. But we persevered like everyone else and it was a great experience for everyone! We’ll spend a couple of days retooling and get ready for Fresno.”

The 49ers return to action Feb. 23-24, as they travel up to Central California for the Fresno State Lexus Classic at the Copper River Country Club in Fresno.
