Sometimes, bad things happen when you leave home. The 49er Women’s Soccer team, which had such a stellar home stand over the last few weeks, just left town a few days ago to begin a four game road stint that won’t see them playing at Long Beach State again until October. In their first game of the trip, Long Beach State (4-2-2) dropped their second 1-0 decision of the season, falling 1-0 at Utah (3-5-1).
Lauren Porter converted her first goal of the season in the 72nd minute, as she took a corner kick from Katy Reineke and scored at 71:02 to make it 1-0. The 49ers managed just one shot in the second half, by Mariko Strickland in the 76th minute, after the 49ers outshot the Utes 6-to-4 in the first half. Utah took six shots in the second half, and 10 for the contest, with three on goal.
The 49ers, who average nearly nine corner kicks a game, were limited to three on the night.
The 49ers had a flurry of activity early, as a Hayley Bolt shot was saved in the 18th minute, prior to an offsides call. Kim Silos then countered with a shot that was blocked in the 21st minute that kept the contest scoreless.
LBSU remains in the Beehive State for a contest at former Big West foe, Utah State, on Sunday starting at 10 a.m. Pacific. Hopefully they’ll find their road legs and get back to their winning ways.
