No. 15 Long Beach State had a solid opening day at the Triton Invitational hosted by UC San Diego, upsetting No. 14 Hartwick 11-7 and pushing No. 11 Loyola Marymount to double overtime before losing 9-8.

Long Beach State started off the day with an 11-7 upending of Hartwick, behind three goals from senior Keala O’Sullivan. The 49ers extended a 6-3 halftime lead to 11-4 in the third quarter, and then held on to take the victory.

In the second match of the day, the 49ers were led by Lauren Sieprath who had three goals, including two in the first quarter to help spark the 49er effort. The Lions would finish the first half ahead 6-3, but Long Beach State would respond in the second half. Kristin Stragier totaled 16 saves in the match, holding the Lions scoreless in the third while Long Beach State scored three goals to tie the match at 6. Both teams picked up two goals in the fourth, as Kelsie Emerick tied the match with 1:22 remaining to send the game into overtime. However, after a scoreless first overtime, LMU put the match away with a Nicole Hughes goal.

The 49ers (1-2) will continue play all day Saturday at the Triton Invitational on the campus of UC San Diego.
