10:05am | Freshman forward Tim Harty scored a pair of goals and sophomore forward Jessie Aguirre had a goal and two assists to lead the Long Beach City College men’s soccer team to a 5-2 South Coast Conference win over visiting El Camino College Compton Center on Friday at LBCC.
With the win, Long Beach improved to 6-5-5 overall and 3-4-3 in the SCC while Compton dropped to 0-12-3 and 0-8-2 in conference play.
The first half of the contest was an offensive shootout as LBCC totaled 10 shots to Compton’s seven. Long Beach got first-half goals from Andres Montes (3rd minute) and Robert Burgos (28th minute) while Compton’s Adrian Robles (4th minute) and Jesus Mejia (38th minute) found the back of the net.
But the Vikings took over in the second half with three unanswered goals. Long Beach outshot Compton in the second half by an 11-3 margin. LBCC wasted little time in retaking the lead when Aguirre took a pass from Christian Gonzalez for a breakaway goal in the 46th minute.
Long Beach poured it on when Harty broke free for his two breakaway goals in the 64th and 87th minutes to seal the win.
Freshman goalkeeper Jesus Gutierrez posted five saves for the Vikings.
According to co-head coach Cameron Beaulac, the key to the second half was controlling the midfield. “Tiago (Morais) did an excellent job in the second half controlling the midfield and the tempo of our offense,” Beaulac said.
For Compton, goalkeeper Issac Romero posted eight saves.
Long Beach men’s soccer returns to action on Tuesday (Nov 1) when they travel to face rival Cerritos College in a 1:00pm conference game.
In women’s soccer, freshman midfielder Michelle Cardenas scored a pair of first-half goals to help lead the Long Beach City College women’s soccer team to a 5-0 South Coast Conference win over visiting El Camino College Compton Center on Friday at LBCC.
The win improved Long Beach to 10-5-1 overall and 6-3-1 in the SCC while Compton dropped to 6-10-1 and 1-9-0 in conference play.
Long Beach controlled the ball for most of the game and overwhelmed the Tartars with continuous shots. LBCC closed the contest outshooting Compton by a 23-0 margin.
Cardenas posted goals in the 14th and 22nd minutes to stake the Vikings to a 2-0 lead. Freshman Priscilla Cortez and Liliana Montano added first-half goals to put LBCC up 4-0 at halftime. Sophomore Cristina Landavazo got in on the action with a goal in the 63rd minute to close out the scoring for the Vikings.
Freshmen goalkeepers Ashley Buckner and Jeanette DeAnda combined for the shutout in for LBCC, the Vikings’ fifth of the season.
For Compton, Erika Trejo totaled seven saves in 64 minutes and Ana Rodriguez had four saves over the final 26 minutes of the contest.
Long Beach women’s soccer returns to action on Tuesday (Nov 1) when they travel to face rival Cerritos College in a 3:15pm conference game.
