Does it seem like there aren’t as many Long Beach games on this weekend as there have been recently? Well, that’s because there aren’t; so many of our teams have advanced that they have byes for a few days, but the Men’s Indoor Volleyball team and Women’s Water Polo team will be playing early next week. Be sure to check back for more updates!
Saturday, August 16
The US Men’s Water Polo team, which at 2-1 is the worst off of the teams featuring Long Beach athletes, is facing an incredibly talented Croatian team. They’ll need a big day from Tony Azevedo and their other four Long Beach high school grads to come out on top today. NBC, 12:30-4pm.
LBCC athlete Magdalena Lewy-Boulet will be running in the women’s marathon tonight, one of three American runners competing. She was the runner up at the US Olympic Trials, and will face stiff competition tonight—still, marathon running is one of the most unpredictable events at the Olympics, and anything is possible. NBC, 7:30-10pm.
Sunday, August 17
Misty May-Treanor and Kerri Walsh will take on the Brazilian duo on the sand in the quarterfinals. May/Walsh have won 105 matches in a row, and are surely smelling their second Olympic gold, just a few games away. But are they thinking too far ahead? It’s unlikely… NBC, 12:30-2am.
In US Women’s Volleyball action, Long Beach State grads Danielle Scott-Arruda and Tayyiba Haneef-Park and company will face off against Poland, who are fielding their first Olympic team in forty years. Should be a good chance for the Americans to build steam going into the quarterfinals, which they’re already guaranteed a spot in. NBC, 10am-12pm.
