Thanks to an astronomical shooting display by the No. 22 Washington Huskies, the Long Beach State 49ers dropped their second consecutive game to fall to 3-4 overall at Hec Edmundson Pavilion in Seattle last night.
The 49ers fell by a lopsided score of 102-75, but that wasn’t the worst loss of the night. Junior shooting guard Larry Anderson broke his left hand during the contest and will be out for at least the next few weeks. He had been averaging 11.7 PPG and 5.3 RPG on the season.
The injured Anderson was the only 49er starter not to score in double figures, as point guard Casper Ware led Long Beach State with 18 points and 5 assists, while T.J. Robinson had 15 points and 10 rebounds. Guard Greg Plater had 13 and forward Eugene Phelps added 11.
But the 49ers committed 18 turnovers (7 by Ware) and allowed the Huskies to shoot 61.2% from the floor and 53.8% from three-point range. Off the bench, C.J. Wilcoz led Washington with 20 points off 6-8 three-point shooting, while starting guards Isaiah Thomas and Abdul Gaddy carved up the Long Beach defense for 19 and 17 points, respectively.
The Long Beach bench could not keep the team in the game, especially with junior forward Edis Dervisevic sitting out with a sprained arch. Senior wingman Tristan Wilson scored 9 points off the bench, but Dervisevic was replaced inside by Lin Chang and Kyle Richardson, who combined for just 4 points and 2 rebounds in 26 minutes.
Long Beach was not expected to win against their second nationally-ranked opponent this season, but a 27-point blowout was also not what the 49ers had in mind. They face an uphill battle with a looming road trip and both their most athletic player and first man off the bench sidelined. The 49ers return to Long Beach tomorrow night to host BYU-Hawaii before embarking on a three-game road trip to Boise State, Utah State and North Carolina.
