Reports From LBSU

John Mallinger shot a 74 in Sunday’s final round of the 110th U.S. Open at Pebble Beach Golf Links to tie for 22nd place. This was Mallinger’s best U.S. Open finish since last year at Bethpage when he tied for 45th with a 11-over-par 291. Mallinger finished the 72-hole tournament at 9-over 293.

Graeme McDowell (Northern Ireland) claimed the championship by one-stroke over Gregory Havret (France), ending a 40-year European drought in this championship.

Mallinger recorded four birdies for the round with three bogeys and two double-bogeys coming in at the par-4 2nd and 9th holes.

In Saturday`s third round action, Mallinger fired a 1-under 70 to tie his best round at a U.S. Open. Last year, Mallinger carded a 70 in the second round in Bethpage, N.Y.

“John loves Pebble and I think an Open set up really suits his game, so this isn’t really surprising,” said former 49er Head Coach Bob Livingstone. “He has had a tough year but some good things have happened to him the past few weeks. So I hope he will use this as a spring board to finishing strong this year.”

Mallinger (Escondido) was a four-year (1998-2001) letterwinner under Livingstone, helping the 49ers advance to their first NCAA Tournament appearance in 2000. Mallinger earned All-Big West first-team honors two years in a row as he finished in fifth in 2000 and tied for 18th in 2001. Mallinger recorded ten top-10 finishes in is four years at LBSU.
