10:00pm | For much of Wednesday’s Moore League girls’ basketball game at Cabrillo, the Jaguars and Lakewood Lancers struggled to score.  The difference was that the Jaguars had Jamie Robinson, and the Lancers didn’t.  Robinson put on a show with 28 points and 15 rebounds to lift her team to a 62-46 victory.  The win moves Cabrillo to 3-4, and drops Lakewood to 1-6 in league.

It was a five-point game with four minutes left in the third quarter, but that’s as close as the Lancers would get because, according to Robinson, “all I have to do is warm up a little bit.”  Her 20-point second half all started with the game at it’s closest when Carmella Morris stole the ball and found Robinson on the break, who finished with a lay up and the foul.

The Jaguars went into the fourth quarter up 42-32, and proceeded to go on a 13-4 run, led by Robinson’s 12 fourth quarter points.  “Some people on this team still believe we can make the playoffs,” said Robinson.  “I’m trying to play like that.”

Just like it ended, it began with Robinson and Morris carrying most of the load for host Cabrillo as Lakewood struggled to put the proverbial biscuit in the basket.  Robinson and Morris scored 12 of the Jag’s 16 first quarter points, while the Lancers made just one field goal in the opening twelve minutes, relying almost exclusively on the free throw shooting of guard Jasmine Balangue.  The senior captain went 8-for-9 from the charity stripe and kept Lakewood in the game as they trailed 26-15 at half.

After the break— and after Lakewood coach Deborah Caine challenged her to help her team— Aljinee Brunson came off the bench and quickly changed the pace of the game with some hustle, two steals, five rebounds and 15 points (12 of them after the half).

But when the four minute mark of the third quarter rolled around, and Robinson was officially warmed up, the Lancers couldn’t catch up to the Jags, who also took advantage of 13 Lakewood turnovers in the second half.

Lakewood will return home to take on powerhouse Poly, while Cabrillo will stay home and entertain Compton.
