Watching Chaka Khan’s rendition of “The Star Spangled Banner” at Dodger Stadium last night brought back memories of Roseanne Bar’s rendition in San Diego so many years ago.
I’ve been to my share of sporting events (and watched a few as well) and most of the time the national anthem is sung decently. That being said, it’s not a very good song and it’s pretty hard to sing.
(Side Note: Yes, it’s beautiful to hear the anthem and think of the colonists defending their freedom and the land where they had raised their families, but it’s not the best song ever written. “God Bless America” is a much better song, speaking in song quality terms, if that makes any sense.)
So, watching Khan made me cringe, and it made me realize how good Whitney Houston’s rendition at the 1991 Super Bowl was.
I reminisced and came to this conclusion… This country needs that again.
Let’s not get too political (while not getting too ridiculous) but more than fifty percent of this country is not happy with the happenings (or so polls say) and I think we need a unity song. A revolution song, Bob Marley style.
The nation watching the ‘91 Bowl saw Houston take the stage while the troops were in the desert for the first time, and the country was looking for a rallying cry. I think we need that rallying cry again.
This country needs a moment, and if that moment’s ever going to happen, my money says it’s going to happen at a sporting event.
Do you believe in miracles?
