The 2009 soccer season is over for both the Long Beach City College women’s and men’s teams. The Southern California Regional Playoffs brackets were announced today following the postseason coaches meeting at Fullerton College and LBCC was not listed among the region’s top 16 for the women or top 14 for the men.
It is an unfamiliar feeling for both squads. The Long Beach women failed to reach the postseason for the first time in 10 years. The Viking men had their string of five straight playoff appearances snapped as well.
The LBCC women finished the season ranked No. 20 in SoCal following a third-place South Coast Conference finish at 9-5 and a 12-8 overall record. Two consecutive losses to close the season hurt the Vikings.
The Viking men closed the year at No. 16 in the power rankings. Long Beach finished fourth in the SCC with a 6-5-3 mark and was 10-8-3 overall. The men faced an uphill battle after a tough first half of the season but closed the year strong as they were unbeaten in seven of their last nine games.
Santiago Canyon received the women’s top seed and Rio Hondo is the region’s top men’s squad.
