If any Jordan football fan was nervous about a letdown after securing a playoff spot: never fear, John Timu is here.
The Jordan Panthers continued their winning ways on Friday at Cabrillo High School, defeating the Jaguars 49-6. Junior quarterback Timu usually just shows off his quick feet. Friday, he did so to buy time in the pocket, then showed off his quick release on the way to four touchdown passes, to three different receivers, Tyaries Francis, Tommy Elliott, and C.J. Willey. The added offensive versatility will make Timu that much scarier to whoever they play in the first round of the CIF Playoffs.
“We can’t let up now,” said Jordan coach Scott Meyer. “We wanted to work on some things, like the passing game, and I think we did that tonight.”
On defense, the Panthers welcomed back senior leader Tani Maka to the ranks, just days after Maka was cleared by doctors to play with an injured forearm. Maka primarily played safety instead of his familiar linebacker spot but, “he was an inspirational lift for our team,” said Meyer.
The loss is the ninth of the year for the Jaguars, who have allowed 429 points on the season, while scoring only 85. They’re a young program with a potentially bright future, much the way Jordan was a few years ago. If they want to take the first step towards getting there, they’ll need to step up next week against Millikan to try and get their first victory of the season—the Rams are also winless in league.
With a league record of 4-1 going into their final regular season contest against Poly, Jordan’s Meyer is not at all on the fence as to whether or not to play his starters. “We’re going to give them our best shot. It’s really for the Moore League title… You know, the Giants lost to the Patriots in the last week of the season before they played well in the playoffs, and beat them in the Super Bowl.”
