Special Thank You To Mrs. Nancy Hoyt For The Words And Pictures

At Carver Elementary School the inclusion of every special education student into the general education setting is a top priority. On Friday, their annual Jog-a-thon was no exception.

Carver’s Cougars cheered for each other as they jogged, rolled, walked, hula hoped, and jumped rope on Friday as a fund raiser for Carver Elementary School.  Teachers, staff members and parents joined together as a unified family of diverse learners to help raise money for their school.

Carver is quite unique, as two out of every ten students are special education students. The special day classes range from pre-kindergarten to fifth grade. Medical conditions for students in our orthopedically impaired classes include Cerebral Palsy, Spina Bifida, Osteogenesis Imperfecta, Muscular Dystrophy, and Mental Retardation. Carver services 15 students in RSP along with 54 who received speech and language services due to articulation or communication processing disorders. Currently there are 10 OI students who are mainstreamed into the general education of classrooms on a regular basis for core curricular content areas.  Teachers collaborate on a daily basis to modify the curriculum and make accommodations as needed.

It’s obvious that Carver Elementary teachers, students and parents embrace and value the ethnic, cultural and physical differences amongst their population.
