Another week of blowouts in local high school football as Friday night’s victors won by a combined 125-20. One team dug into first place while three others head toward a showdown for second. The Moore League is getting tense.
Long Beach Poly 48
Wilson 7
Long Beach Poly reaffirmed their place atop the Moore League standings on Friday night, by defeating the only other remaining undefeated team with a 48-7 win over the Wilson Bruins at Veterans Memorial Stadium.
Poly led 38-0 at the half and didn’t look back.
Poly quarterback Chaiyse Hales threw two touchdowns and Keltain Malveux rushed for two more, all in the first half. After a rough start to the season with lopsided losses to Mission Viejo and St. Bonaventure, Long Beach Poly has recently looked very much the team that many predicted to contend for CIF and State titles this year.
The speed of Poly’s position players was too much for the Wilson defense, which has been extremely stingy against other Moore League teams so far this season.
Wilson’s spread offense ran into trouble against a speedy Poly defense, but alternating quarterbacks Brett Harper and Andy Perez did find some daylight on a few offensive drives. The Bruins end their season schedule with games against two other teams contending for second place in the league – assuming Poly stays undefeated – in Jordan and then Lakewood.
Lakewood 55
Millikan 7
The Lancers have been on a mission since their loss to Poly a few weeks ago, and Millikan simply stood in their way on Friday night. Lakewood rolled over the home team Rams and enjoy a bye next week before ending the season against Wilson.
Jordan 22
Compton 6
The Panthers continue to impress under first year head coach Thomas Barnes with a victory on the road at Compton on Friday night. With Jordan, Wilson and Lakewood all in the mix for second place in the Moore League, and good seeds in the CIF playoffs, the next two weeks will be very interesting.
