It’s a rivalry the Compton Tarbabes haven’t always been happy to be a part of—it’s been more than twenty years since they beat their cross-town counterparts, the Dominguez Dons. But after a gutsy 12-8 win, Compton is finally back on top, as well as 2-0 on the season.
The game couldn’t have been more different than their first victory of 2008, a 55-0 romp over Bloomington that saw the Tarbabes rush for nearly 500 yards. This was a defensive struggle; the Tarbabes played well, winning the turnover battle, most notably with a game-winning last second interception at the goal line by Chris Jones, who told the Press Telegram’s Robert Morales he was “going to Disneyland.”
The Super Bowl reference is apt—for Compton’s first victory over Dominguez since the 80s, the team went nuts, dumping coolers on Coach Bryant and swarming the field. It’s a big night for the Tarbabes, no doubt, but they’ll have to calm down and get back to business next week—they have a game on the road against Granada Hills Kennedy before opening Moore League action against Cabrillo.
