Junior catcher Siria Duran had three hits and scored 2 runs while adding an RBI to lead the way in a 10-0 Cabrillo win over Baldwin Park in the opening day of the Whittier Tournament. Senior pitcher Janessa Martinez pitched a complete game shutout and struck out five hitters in a shortened game (due to mercy rule) and also scored a run. Senior Leslie Navarro added a double and a triple on way to three RBI. Senior Elena Gutierrez add a hit and two RBI while Junior Markisha Roches added two base hits and an RBI.
Martinez also struck out ten batters against Norwalk later in the day, an error-plagued 8-0 loss for Cabrillo. With the loss, Cabrillo’s record is even at 4-4, as they head into Moore League play next week. The Jags open against Poly on Tuesday, at 1:30pm at Cabrillo. Community organizer/activist/Long Beach lover Justin Rudd will throw out the ceremonial first pitch for the first league game.
