Millikan 12, Cabrillo 0
The Rams needed a game like this. After a tough loss to Wilson on Tuesday they needed to get right at the plate, in the circle, and on defense. All three facets of the game were on for Millikan as they put up a five spot in the fifth and cruised to a 12-0 win over Cabrillo.
In the circle Brooke Cullison dominated with a one-hit complete game shutout. The junior faced just one batter over the minimum and set the Jaguars down in order in every inning but the second inning while striking out nine. The defense was there to pick her up with no errors.
“We started a little flat,” said Millikan head coach Don Harper. “But Brooke was amazing today… she’s so focused out there and nothing really gets to her. She’s in her third year here and she’s embracing a leadership role. It’s starts in practice when the team sees a pitcher working hard, and they want to be there to pick her up… We needed that game.”
At the plate the Rams racked up 14 hits and got got it going in the fourth inning with good base running. Melisa Sponholtz started it off with a double and when Megan Estacio laid down a nice bunt, Sponholtz came all the way around to score on the throw to first. After two walks moved Brittany Adler into scoring position Taylor Florentino sprayed a single into right. Jacqueline Alvarez scooped it up and made a beautiful throw to the plate where catcher Siria Duran was waiting for Adler. Duran got the ball and made a good effort to reach back for the sliding Adler, but the junior right fielder made a wide slide and slapped the plate with her left hand. The Millikan bench celebrated while the Cabrillo bench screamed that Duran had made the tag on Adler’s shoulder. That play opened the flood gates and the Rams went on to score nine more runs.
Millikan will head to the Woodbridge Tournament in Orange County during the break, while Cabrillo won’t play again until they host Jordan in two weeks.
