Wilson 11, Poly 0
The Bruins put it all together yesterday afternoon at Joe Rogers Field in a five-inning win over the designated home team Jackrabbits. Wilson pounded 13 hits in it’s five frames and got some outstanding pitching from sophomore Hannah Duarte.
“We’ve played four or five teams in the local top 25 teams, and I think it’s starting to show,” said Wilson head coach Chris Leveque. “Bottom line, when Brandi (Enriquez) and Kori (Cochran) get on base, we’re tough to beat.”
The one-two punch at the top of the order has been getting on base all year, only recently has the heart of the order started cashing them in. Yesterday however, it was almost all the senior Enriquez (2-for-2, 2RBI, 3R, 2BB, 2SB) and the freshman Cochran (4-for-4, 2-RUN HR, 3B, 3RBI, 3R) doing the damage.
In the circle, Duarte only gave up two hits in four innings of work and struck out three. At one point she retired eight batters in a row, which included a 1-2-3 third inning that took seven pitches.
“Hannah has a good attitude and she’s starting to trust all of her pitches,” said Leveque. He credits the most recent improvement to assistant coach Erlinda Stavrou, who has taken over pitch-calling duties. According to Leveque, Stavrou has Duarte working her off-speed selection to near perfection. “(Duarte) is a bulldog out there, she competes, and if she keeps working she’ll be lights out as a senior.”
Wilson improves to 3-1 in the Moore League and will see Cabrillo on Thursday. Poly falls to 2-2 and will travel to Compton on Thursday.
Millikan 16, Compton 0
The Rams pitched freshman Megan Liter, who made quick work of the Tarbabes for her first win, pitching all five innings with just one hit and 10 Ks. Taylor Florentino and Marissa Luce each had three hits with a home run. Millikan moves to 3-2 in league and has a bye on Thursday. Compton falls to 0-4 and takes on Poly Thursday.
Jordan 3, Cabrillo 1
Down 1-0 in the sixth inning, the Panthers mashed three hits past Jaguar outfielders and scored three times. The Jaguars had base runners, but could not capitalize. Jordan improves to 2-2 and travels to Lakewood on Thursday. Cabrillo falls to 1-4 and travels to Wilson on Thursday.
