9:29am | For the first time this season, a freshman has received Big West Women’s Basketball Player of the Week honors as Lauren Spargo snagged Long Beach State’s first award of the year. Spargo led Long Beach State to a pair of home wins last weekend to improve its record to 5-7 and 4-0 at home. Early in the week, the Santa Clarita, Calif., native came off the bench to spark the 49ers to a 66-52 victory over Dartmouth. The 49ers were trailing by seven before Spargo entered the game and scored eight unanswered points. The 5-11 guard went on to match her career-high with 16 points while adding two rebounds and two steals to her total.
Two days later in game one of the Beach Classic Presented by Residence Inn/Courtyard Marriott, Spargo set a career-best with 18 points in a 76-56 triumph over Western Michigan. She also totaled season-highs in field goals made (7), 3-point field goals made (4), rebounds (7) and assists (2). The 49ers take on Wichita State in the championship game of the Beach Classic tonight.
For the week, Spargo averaged 17.0 points and 4.5 rebounds per contests, while shooting .481 from the field.
