Former Long Beach State golfers Paul Goydos and John Mallinger are set to play Thursday and Friday at the 110th U.S. Open at Pebble Beach Golf Links.
Mallinger (group two) is scheduled to tee off at 7 a.m. on Thursday as he’s paired with Rafael Cabrera-Bello (Spain) and Steve Allan (Australia). Goydos, also a Wilson High grad, is set to tee off at 1:03 p.m. with Michael Campbell (New Zealand) and Seung Yul Noh (Korea). Both players will tee off from the No. 10 hole.
For the second round on Friday, Goydos (group seven) is scheduled for a 7:33 a.m. start, while Mallinger (group 27) will begin the round at 12:30 p.m. Both players will tee off from the first hole.
Goydos is making his 10th U.S. Open appearance as he recorded his best finish in 1999 at Pinehurst No. 2 as he tied for 12th with Davis Love III and Paul Azinger with a 9-over par 289. Mallinger his making his fifth U.S. Open appearance as he had his best finish at last year’s tournament at Bethpage as he tied for 45th with an 11-over 291.
Goydos qualified for this year’s U.S. Open as he tied for third in the 36-hole qualifying event in Memphis, while Mallinger survived a six-man playoff for five spots at the qualifier in Columbus, Ohio. Mallinger parred the first playoff hole to advance. Goydos (Long Beach) was a member of the Long Beach State men’s golf program from 1983-86 under former head coach Del Walker. He earned All-PCAA first-team honors in 1985 as he placed fifth at the conference championship.
Mallinger (Escondido) was a four-year (1998-2001) letterwinner under former head coach Bob Livingstone, helping the 49ers advance to their first NCAA Tournament appearance in 2000. Mallinger earned All-Big West first-team honors two years in a row as he finished in fifth in 2000 and tied for 18th in 2001. Mallinger recorded ten top-10 finishes in is four years at LBSU.
