DIVISION 1 BOYS’ STATE BASKETBALL TOURNAMENT SEMIFINAL
Poly vs. Westchester
Roybal High, 7pm
If you think the Poly boys’ basketball team is the hottest in the region after their three-point victory over Etiwanda on Thursday (story|video), then you haven’t heard about the Westchester Comets.
City Section Division 1 champions, the Comets (29-3) haven’t lost since January in a non-league contest and are coming off a Championship win over Taft, 70-60.
Westchester is the best team Poly has seen in the postseason thus far. The Comets are just as athletic and just as tall as the Jackrabbits. Veteran guards Kareem Jamar (#32) and Jordin Mayes (#12) have captained the offense all year and dealt with the relentless Taft pressure in the fourth quarter to close the game out. They finished with 16 and 12 points respectively, but for Westchester the real damage is done on the wings.
The Jackrabbits will need to keep a few eyes on the versatile Dwayne Polee (#0) and Menas Stephens (#10). The 6’6″ Polee finished with 10 rebounds against Taft to go along with his team-high 19 points, 15 of which came in the second half. The 6’4″ Stephens finished with 13 points.
Poly’s key will be slowing the game down, getting to the free throw line, and keeping the scoring to a minimum. That’s what Taft did in the first half and it was tied at 24-24 until the Comets ran away in the second half.
It’s going to be a classic and we hope to see you in the stands (Get Directions) but if you can’t make it be sure to come back to LBPOSTsports for all the coverage.
