Long Beach State sophomore middle blocker Haleigh Hampton helped the USA Junior National Team to a fourth place finish at the 2011 Junior World Championships held in Lima, Peru. Long Beach State advanced out of pool play to the third-place match, but eventually lost to China.

Team USA ultimately finished in fourth-place out of 16 teams, behind Italy, Brazil, and China.

The Americans had a strong start in the first round of pool play, as they finished in first place, winning all three of their matches to advance to the top of Group E. In that pool, Team USA finished second behind the eventual victors, Team Italy.

Team USA advanced to the medal round with that result, and lost in a five-set game to Brazil, dropping the final set by a 16-14 score to fall into the third-place game. The Americans then won the final set before losing to China 3-1.

Hampton, who played and started for Team USA, finished third on the American squad with 55 kills. She also added 10 blocks and six aces through eight matches. She was the 27th leading scorer throughout the entire tournament.

Hampton now returns to Long Beach, where she will join fellow 2010 First-Team All-Big West selection Caitlin Ledoux in preparation for the 49ers’ 2011 season, where the 49ers will attempt to reach the NCAA Tournament for the 25th consecutive season.
