Welcome to View From the ‘Myd, a new series meant to help those who couldn’t make the game feel at home, and to point out funny stuff that those in attendance may have missed.
First, we would be remiss if we didn’t take a moment to recognize the accomplishments of the Long Beach State 49er Dance Team, who are recently returned from Florida, where they went and won a national championship.
Don’t believe me? Check out the hardware:
That said, it’s probably pretty obvious that this column won’t be as entertaining when the men’s basketball team doesn’t win, which was the case against the Highlanders last night. Aside from the struggles rebounding and shooting, perhaps the biggest indicator of the team’s youth came towards the tail end of a TV timeout, when the 49ers began walking back on the floor. Both refs stared at them and then waved them back to the bench, shouting, “Not…yet…” Hopefully within a few years, Long Beach State players will be a little more accustomed to televised games!
Speaking of the television crews, it was pretty nice to see all the Fox Sports cameras there—didn’t get any photos, but they must have had ten lenses in the building. JJ does a great job with his equipment, but I definitely wondered if they’d really miss just one camera.
Not having watched the broadcast yet (it’s recorded on my DVR but it’s hard to get juiced to watch a replay of an ugly loss at one in the morning) I can’t comment on whether or not the Fox crew did a good job, but I was happy to see they trained one of their legion of cameras on a deserving face, as Mike Weathers was interviewed at halftime.
The only downside was that the venerable Perry Moore, former Athletic Director at The Beach (from 1974-82) and the team’s biggest fan, was booted from his usual courtside seat to make room for the Fox guys. He didn’t seem to mind.
That’s about it for this game—should have plenty more to talk about from the Fullerton game on Thursday, since Tex Winter will be there, and school will be back in session so I imagine attendance will be up (listed at 2,873 for tonight). For now, I’ll just ask this: is the Pyramid being taken over by children?!
If you were at the game and saw anyone or anything that I missed, leave it in the comment section!
