11:50am | Long Beach State led early but couldn’t hold on, dropping an 11-3 decision to No 1. Stanford in women’s water polo at the Campus Pool on Sunday.
Julia Garyfallou scored with 2:05 to play in the first quarter to give LBSU (4-9) a 1-0 lead. The 49ers took the lead into the second quarter, but Stanford (14-0) outscored the 49ers 4-1 in the period to take a 4-2 lead into the half.
Stanford continued to pressure LBSU, adding four more goals in the third quarter, outscoring LBSU to take an 8-3 lead before adding three goals in the fourth quarter, two of them in the last minute of the game.
Kristen Stagier kept the 49ers close for much of the game, finishing with 10 saves. Chelsea Parks and Lauren Sieprath added goals for the 49ers.
Alyssa Lo lead the Cardinals with three goals, while Jillian Garton and Annika Dries scored two goals each for Stanford.
