A critical child care facility at Cal State Long Beach that serves over 200 children is getting an infusion of $3.5 million in federal funds for critical plumbing, electrical and irrigation repair work, officials announced.

The money will also be used to replace all of the flooring, heating, ventilation and air conditioning units across the Isabel Patterson Child Development Center, which provides child care and early education for children ages 6 months to second grade.

The center includes four individual buildings and several play yards throughout and offers the capacity to serve 230 families among its licensed infant and toddler, preschool, and school-age programs.

Deferred maintenance costs currently amount to around $8 million, Miles Nevin, executive director of Associated Students Inc., said recently. ASI is a CSULB nonprofit that runs a variety of services including the Isabel Patterson Child Development Center.

The federal funding “would tackle the most immediate needs, and about half of the needs,” Nevin said last year.

The $3.5 million in funding was part of Rep. Robert Garcia’s recent Community Project Funding submission to the House Committee on Appropriations and was approved last month.

Garcia, an alumnus of Cal State Long Beach and former ASI student body president, will present the funding to CSULB President Jane Close Conoley in a ceremony Friday afternoon.
