A small plane crashed onto the Field of Dreams athletic field just off the 110 Freeway in San Pedro this afternoon, according to the Los Angeles Fire Department.

Two people aboard the plane were critically injured in the crash, the LAFD reported. Nobody else was hurt.

Fire officials reported the incident just a few minutes before 1 p.m. in the 400 block of Westmont Drive, which is across the 110 Freeway from the LAPD’s Harbor Community Police Station.

Authorities were investigating the circumstances of the crash. The National Transportation Safety Board will ultimately take over the investigation to determine what caused the plane to go down.

A spokesperson with the NTSB said the plane was a Sling 4 TSI and that the two people onboard were a flight instructor and a student. They did not say who was flying the plane.

According to the flight-tracking website FlightAware, the pilot took off from Torrance Airport at around 12:23 p.m. The plane was in the air for almost 30 minutes, going south toward the ocean before looping back and crashing into the field.

The LAFD said the pilot was still in the plane when rescue crews arrived and had to be extricated before being rushed to the hospital.

“We have heard that the pilot and a passenger have been transported to the hospital in critical condition,” county Supervisor Janice Hahn, who represents the area, said on X, formerly Twitter. “Praying that they both survive and grateful that no one on the ground was injured.”
