After a five-year run as one of The Marketplace’s better dining establishments, Sababa Restaurant & Lounge will close its doors with a sad finality on Friday. Known for its Mediterranean cuisine with a California twist and treatment, Sababa owner Sagi Rochman will now focus on his new growing company Better Chains. Sababa will welcome its last guests on Friday, July 31 until 2:00AM. The restaurant is located next door to BevMo at The Marketplace in Long Beach where Second Street and Pacific Coast Highway meet. If you still haven’t had a chance to check out Jesus Christ Superstar, don’t worry, the Long Beach Playhouse is extending performances through August 22 in response to the show’s popularity. This is the first play to be presented using the playhouse’s newly installed sound system. The singers’ voices and the music performed by the talented four-piece ensemble are crystal clear and can be heard evenly throughout the intimate theatre space. If the smell of crackling bacon appeals to you, make sure to stop by the second annual Big Bite Bacon Festival which is having another go at bringing all things bacon-infused to bacon lovers visiting from up and down the coast. The Big Bite Bacon Fest will return to The Queen Mary Saturday, August 1 and Sunday, August 2 with more bacon-based drool-worthy delicacies than ever before. Make sure to check out the next Summer and Music (SAM) event, Twisted at the Pike in downtown Long Beach, where electro-punk outfit Fartbarf will bring their slightly disturbing stage presence, yet undeniably infectious dance beats. The event is slated to take place on Saturday, August 1 from 5:00PM to 11:00PM. Finally, the Special Olympics are in town and Long Beach will be host to a few competitions this weekend. On Friday, July 31, from 9:00AM to 3:00PM cycling will take place at Aquarium Way. From 9:00AM to 12:30PM kayaking will take place at the Long Beach Stadium. From 11:00AM to 5:30PM sailing will take place at the Long Beach Pier. Awards will be presented for cycling and kayaking. On Saturday, August 1, from 8:00AM to 11:00AM a half-marthon competition will take place at Alamitos Beach. The event will feature special guests such as Heather Jackson, Jacqueline Hansen, Linda Potter, Meb Keflezighi and Monique Coleman.
