There is no question about it: for as grand and gorgeous as the Queen Mary is, there is a certain creepiness about the moored ship.
Perhaps it is then fair to say that horror fans should rejoice, given that the producer of The Haunting in Connecticut, Andrew Trapani, is set to make a feature film that will be all things Queen Mary.
“We’re calling it The Shining on a ship,” said Chris Carmichael, CEO of Irvine-based Ubiquity Studios, which is developing the film.
The feature will be written by horror-meister Gary Dauberman. Indie horror fans know him for writing underground flicks like Crawlspace for New Line Cinema and Hellfest for CBS films while industry people know him as the master re-writer, where he’s taken on The Nightmare on Elm Street and Final Destination 5.
The film, set to start production in the upcoming spring, will serve as the inaugural film for Ubiquity Studios. The Queen Mary feature is set to be shot both aboard the ship itself and at Ubiquity’s 30,000 sq. ft. digital facility that was built from the ground up for the company.

Handling international development is Exclusive Media, whose horror credits include the Daniel Radcliffe-led The Woman in Black and the critically acclaimed vampire flick Let Me In, from the director of Cloverfield.
“As one of the grandest ocean liners in history, the Queen Mary makes the perfect backdrop for a feature film,” said Steve Sheldon, Director of Entertainment Events for the Queen Mary. “She has a rich and storied past full of allure, grandeur, tragedy and secrets, and we couldn’t be more excited to be in partnership with both Ubiquity and Exclusive Media.”
The Queen Mary features regular paranormal and haunting tours, with infamous deaths and disappearances having occurred on the ship during its early tenure along the ocean. This should prove fertile thriller ground for any aspiring film production company.
The deal for Ubiquity Studios was assembled by Dan Black of Greenberg Traurig; for Queen Mary LLC, Marc Simon of Cowan DeBaets Abrahams & Sheppard LLP; for IDW, Alexa Pagonas of Michael Black Management; and for Nine/8 Entertainment, Allison Binder of Stone Meyer, Genow, Smelkinson & Binder.
