Kim Kabar, founder of Hungry for Less
9:30am | One way to ease the guilt over holiday (over) eating, is to have a concrete weight loss plan for the New Year.
Start your weight loss plan for the New Year by attending a free introductory class to Hungry for Less this Saturday from 10 to 11 a.m.
Hungry for Less in Long Beach is the nation’s 1st low-cost weight loss program that addresses the #1 reason why women overeat.
“If you’re eating when you aren’t hungry then more than likely you’re heading to the refrigerator or snack cabinet because of some emotion,” said Kim Kabar, founder of Hungry for Less and a long-time resident of Long Beach. “Eating because we are bored, stressed, anxious, frustrated, sad is so common. Unfortunately, when people think of emotions leading us to do something, we think we need to head to an expensive therapist to fix the problem. Not true. It’s just something that one needs to look at if they hope to succeed long-term in their weight loss goals.”
While Hungry for Less primary goal is to educate women about the link between emotions and food, Kabar is quick to point out that the program is not group therapy.
“Nor is it the kind of support group where women sit around in a circle and spend two hours crying over the ice-cream they ate the night before,” said Kabar, a veteran journalist whose work has appeared in the Press Telegram, the Los Angeles Times and numerous travel magazines. “The knowledge that I share with members was gained from my years of personal experience as a yo-yo dieter, as a daughter of a compulsive over-eater and from the more than 25 years that I have spent in various schools of nutrition, fitness and personal transformation.”
Hungry for Less combines the simplicity, accountability, and affordability of Weight Watchers with transformational tools never before used in a mainstream diet programs, says Kabar.
Kabar uses powerful tools that she learned as a student of Landmark Education, as well as from Byron Katie, an international transformational speaker and Geneen Roth, a bestselling author of several books on emotional eating and a woman whom Oprah Winfrey says “opened her eyes” to the fact that struggles with weight are about so much more than shedding pounds or eating fewer calories.
“As wonderful as Weight Watchers has been for millions of women, there are still millions of others who haven’t been able to keep the weight off using this nearly 50-year-old program,” said Kabar, “Weight Watchers was created during a time in our history when women were encouraged not to speak about their emotions. Today, women are of the Oprah generation and are ready and willing now to get to the root of why they eat when they aren’t hungry so they can finally and permanently get off the hamster wheel of diets.”
One aspect of Weight Watchers that Kabar wanted to keep in Hungry for Less was the affordability of the program. Hungry for Less, which currently runs in 6-week workshops, cost $19.50 per session with a $30 registration fee. The main difference between the two programs, however, lies in the topics discussed and tools given, said Kabar.
“In a safe and compassionate way, we encourage women to dig below the surface and to explore the emotions behind their eating,” said Kabar. “We offer amazing transformational tools that help our members get back in touch with their own hunger cues and allow them to begin to question the validity of their stressful thoughts concerning food, weight and body image and of the meanings that they may have placed on situations related to food and weight.”
The introductory class will be held at the founder’s Long Beach home just off Spring Street between Palo Verde and Studebaker (near El Dorado Park). Exact address will be given to all YES RSVPers.
