The Long Beach Airport, in collaboration with the Arts Council for Long Beach, is looking for local artists to enter its art contest of designing aviation-themed coloring sheets intended for the airport’s travelers of all ages.
In this art contest, “Plane to See,” the airport seeks to update, diversify and localize its coloring sheets with “uplifting illustrations of the airport, its history, famous aviators, women in aviation, airplanes and air travel in the modern age,” the LGB said in a statement.
Submissions should reflect Long Beach’s diversity and highlight the city’s airport and its aviation history. LGB was founded in 1923 and is the oldest airport in California.
The airport is now accepting submissions until March 31, and 10 contest winners will also earn $500 honorariums, according to the airport. The contest is open to local artists of all ages and skill levels, but those on the Arts Council’s Artist Registry are especially encouraged to apply, according to the airport. Winners will be announced by May 2022.
Selected drawings will be printed and handed out at community events and to LGB travelers with a designated exhibition space and coloring area, post-security, to be established in the North Concourse, which is a passenger terminal. The images also will be available to download online, according to the airport.
Submissions will be reviewed by a joint panel between of the LGB and Arts Council, according to the airport.
“Every stroke made onto the coloring sheets is an exciting moment of creativity, from choosing colors to delicate shading,” Arts Council for Long Beach Executive Director Griselda Suarez said in a statement.
Art for the LGB is nothing new. In the past, the airport has showcased artwork including an exhibit themed around the COVID-19 pandemic, its Festival of Flight event and art installations affiliated with Cal State Long Beach.
