The Planning and Visual Education Partnership (PAVE) awarded Long Beach State (CSULB) interior design student Jillian Maddox with a $1,500 award after she scored 3rd place in the 2013 International Student Design Competition.
PAVE is solely dedicated to providing financial support to design students–important given even the lack of jobs many design students face, even when attending highly regarded institutions such as Parsons New School of Design and the Fashion Institute of Technology. In this case, $19,000 in grants for students and $6,000 in school awards, of which CSULB’s BFA in interior design program was given $1,000 thanks to Maddox’s win.
PAVE’s competition uniquely focuses on retail design, revolving largely around planning and visual merchandising to lure customers into stores. This year’s sponsor, makeup giant Sephora, asked students to re-imagine their store’s design and visual-merchandising layout.
Maddox opted for the store design–and went Elysium meets Gaga’s “Applause” video with cylindrical entrances and a largely black-and-fluorescent white color palette that mimics Sephora’s signature style.
Maddox will be formally honored with her winning design on display at PAVE’s annual gala next week in New York.
