Long Beach artist Gregory Dane Sabin, known for his expressive self-portraits and paintings of blue collar working men, will be showing a collection of ten works entitled “The Ten,” featuring ten of Long Beach’s most renowned community leaders. These new 48” x 48” works of art will be on display at the newly developed retail space at 851 Pine Ave., from Sunday, March 29 to Saturday, April 11.
“Gregory Sabin’s ability to take such topical subject matter and create art is precisely the unique and positive ways that the DLBA supports local artists, while exhibiting the revitalization of North Pine,” said Kraig Kojian, DLBA President and CEO, in a statement. “We will continue to drive auspicious attention and the interest of potential retailers toward this part of our Downtown.”
A few of the well-known faces include portraits of Long Beach Mayor Robert Garcia, Vice Mayor Suja Lowenthal, Fire Chief Mike DuRee, Police Chief Robert Luna and Kojian himself, to name a few.
Sabin, a Seattle native who moved to Long Beach in 2004, paints dramatic and oftentimes confrontational, almost violently rendered paintings that are rife with the hard-tailed movements of his paintbrush. Most recently, Sabin completed an extensive series of butcher-themed paintings in 2013.
The opening reception for Sabin is open to the public and will be held at the revamped space on Pine Ave. and 9th St. on Sunday, March 29 from 4:00PM to 7:00PM.
