A Long Beach-based art collective whose mission is to raise awareness of the lack of gallery space in the city is featuring six of its artists at an exhibit in Signal Hill.

While space for artists is said to be scarce, these working creatives still find and support those determined to help them thrive.

This Saturday Greenly Art Space has invited the public to the opening of In Their Own Style, featuring six local artists from the Long Beach Creative Group, also known as LBCG, whose members find and create space for local artists to display their work. Greenly is a nonprofit that regularly curates art shows, provides mentoring, art therapy and a space for making art.

“At Greenly we know first-hand the struggles with keeping an actual gallery space open,” said curator and director Kimberly Hocking. “Greenly Art Space has been showing work of community artists for the last eight years. We are a gallery that is tied more to the people that make up our community of fellow artists than to specific city boundaries and have been grateful to work with many diverse artists over the years.”

In this latest exhibit, each artist approaches the natural world with varying visual interpretations. Robyn Feeley’s pastel paintings on velour feature lively local sea creatures, Greg Fritsche’s plein air-style impressionist works show calming landscapes and Michiel Daniel sucks the viewer into strange worlds with digital paintings of surreal environments.

Artist and LBCG co-founder Marka Burns, who organizers at Greenly have been working with closely to curate this show, is exhibiting her digital, mixed-media collage works on identity and disguise; Donald Tiscareno will show expressive paintings referencing art he saw in Paris in the early 60s; and Dorte Christjansen’s detailed watercolors will entertain with their rich and lively colors, often inspired by subjects found in her own garden.

“Local Long Beach artists are a significant part of the community of artists that we work with around the world,” said Greenly curator and director Kimberly Hocking. “Greenly has worked closely with many of the artists in the Long Beach Creative Group, and we are happy to highlight their amazing work to those in our community.”

“We hope to bring awareness to the lack of gallery space in Long Beach and we consider Signal Hill an adjacent community that shares many common interests with Long Beach; including awareness of the many artists and lack of space to exhibit,” said Burns. “There are literally hundreds of artists in the Signal Hill and Long Beach area.”

The opening reception will take place from 7 to 9 p.m. In Their Own Style will run through Sept. 29 and can be viewed by setting up an appointment at (562) 533-4020 or during regular gallery hours Monday, Wednesday and Friday 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. For more info, check out the website here.
