This week was beyond busy — and finally I had a moment on my calendar that wasn’t entirely full. That being said, I decided to grab the laptop and head out to some local spot to get caught up on work while simultaneously grubbing. I was picky that day: the place need not be too crowded, lacked a greasy spoon feel, and have parking. Berlin was ultimately the choice.

I parked right outside, walked across the street, and sat down at a rather large, communal-like table that spans the length of the entrance. The entire front facade — gigantic sliding doors that make the the entire space open-air — offered a nice breeze that was perfect for the 69 degree weather. Feeling awkward having such a great moment alone, I decided to call Miles to join me.

He opted for a the Fresh Market Salad (attempting to be healthy but I’ve seen him otherwise) and I went for the customer-favorite Yellow Curry Chicken. While I waited on Miles to show up, I grabbed a cup of Joe that was served in a pleasantly large saucer.

I had heard about problems with speed here but the order came up surprisingly fast. My Yellow Curry Chicken — served in two bowls: one with the curry and the other to the brim with white Jasmine rice — was fantastic: chicken, peas, green beans, potatoes, and carrots sat in a creamy yellow broth and topped with fresh Thai basil. My only complaint doesn’t lie in the flavor department (plenty of that) but the lack of protein since the chicken was rather skimpy.

Miles ate every bit of greens, chicken, olives, cheese, roasted red peppers, and chickpeas that graced his square plate. He usually orders salads here as he has never been disappointed by them. For those feeling decadent, get the wedge cut salad that offers a giant head of iceberg drenched in house-made ranch dressing, bacon, and blue cheese crumbles.

Overall, it seems like Berlin is trying to be more than just a House of Joe. And though there are some kinks that need to be ironed out, it’s a place that is making the neighborhood grow in character and charm.

Until Next Time, Keep Eating Long Beach
