Leo’s Mexican Grill, arguably one of DLTB’s most popular Mexican joints, is expanding with a second location over in Willmore on Magnolia between 7th and 8th Streets.

It will take over what was once one of the city’s best places to score carne asada tacos, Las Delicias de Michoacan and while my stomach and soul is a bit dampened at the loss of Las Delicias, it is likely to be a better overall move for both Willmore and Leo’s.

Leo’s was taken over by its current owner just a handful of years ago and has since seen a dramatic uptick in customers and likability. With the installation of a new bar and an increase in quality—along with taco fests every Tuesday and Friday—Leo’s became the go-to Mexican staple for those unwilling to hike to 12th & Pine for Los Compadres or north of Anaheim on Magnolia for El Taco Loco #3.

So this expansion makes even more sense: Willmore is sadly devoid of food spots and the uniqueness of this location—a corner shop below apartments and surrounded by other residential units—could make for a genuinely cool spot to grub down on tacos.

The only question that remains is how quick they can score the beer and wine license so we can get those $1 Tecates on Tuesdays and Fridays as well.

Leo’s Mexican Grill is currently located at 225 E Broadway in DTLB. The second location is set to open within the coming weeks.
