Though tonight’s cocktail menu has yet to be released, here is one of Roxanne’s signature tequila drinks, The Misfit, made with Cimmaron Silver Tequila, Vida del Maguey Organic Mezcal, Green Chartreuse, house ginger syrup, fresh lemon and habañero shrub. Photo courtesy of Roxanne’s.
There’s always been more to Roxanne’s than meets the eye. Its happy red, playfully-retro logo could easily be mistaken as the brand of a 50s-style family diner but when you step inside, you see the embossed tin tile ceiling, the apothecary scale, the iconic old-school phone booth, and, of course, the vast array of rare and high-end liquors dedicated to their love of craft cocktails.
Beyond being a hidden gem in its own right, Roxanne’s Lounge has one of the (now not-so) best kept secrets in town: The Exhibition Room, its no-joke, password-required speakeasy that serves as an homage to Dennis McCarthy’s then-illegal alcohol operation in Long Beach during the Prohibition Era.
Though its been in operation since last October, The Exhibition Room has up until now been reserved for only those who knew about it. But now, Roxanne’s owner Robert Molina wants to announce it to the public—on National Tequila Day.
“The Exhibition Room has typically been reserved for whiskey and gin only,” Molina said. “So we felt this was a unique and perfect way to invite the public to our little secret and taste some tequilas.”
In honor of this most thirst-quenching holiday, drinkers are invited to sit in the Long Beach-history saturated Exhibition Room and learn about the history of tequila, taste some straight up, and experience a cocktail list that is so secret, even Molina himself couldn’t inform anyone what will be offered up.
Head bartender and craft cocktail guru David Valiente will be crafting the menu, Molina will be on hand to welcome guests and talk all things tequila, and as always at the Exhibition Room, a piano player—one of whom can do an awesomely retro (and by retro, I mean 1930s-style) rendition of Paula Abdul’s “Straight Up”.
Tonight’s tasting (complimentary if you purchase a drink) will start promptly at 8:30PM. However, you have to RSVP and, of course, get your password. To grab your password, text 562-826-2940 upon arrival and you’ll receive the password via text in response. Find that old-school phone booth and ring yourself in.
Welcome to The Exhibition Room.
The Exhibition Room is located inside Roxanne’s Lounge, at 1115 E Wardlow Rd. Reservations can also be made at theexhibitionroom.setmore.com.
