Eleven Long Beach-based artists earned cash prizes in a contest to design aviation-themed coloring sheets intended for Long Beach Airport’s travelers of all ages, airport officials announced this week.

The airport, in collaboration with the Arts Council for Long Beach, received design submissions from more than 100 local artists of all ages. In this art contest, “Plane to See,” the airport sought to update, diversify and localize its coloring sheets with “uplifting illustrations” related to the airport, its history, famous aviators, women in aviation and more, LGB said in a statement.

Artists were encouraged to highlight Long Beach’s diversity, the city’s airport and its aviation history. LGB was founded in 1923 and is the oldest airport in California.

Prizes of $500 were awarded to the five winners in the youth division, according to LGB. They were Janell Cobian of Cabrillo High School, Cadence Malaluan of Marshall Academy of the Arts, Alexander Payton of Millikan High School, Dalia Reyes of Cabrillo High School and Lynette Zapet of Cabrillo High School.

Six adult winners also earned $500 prizes. They were Nathan Asplund, Jasmine Boyd, Margie Darrow, Jacki Hays, Andrea James and Curtis McGinnis. Asplund, Boyd and James each won more than one prize for submitting multiple works, LGB added.

LGB said that the selected drawings are being printed and distributed at community events, and the coloring sheets also will be available to download here.

“Flying in The City of Long Beach” by Jacki Hays.
“Daugherty LGB” by Nathan Asplund.
“Mr. and Mrs. Daugherty” by Jasmine Boyd. Earl Daugherty opened a 20-acre flying field for his flight training school at “Chateau Thierry,” which was located at Bixby Road and Long Beach Boulevard.
