9:00am | Like many mothers, Colleen Duncan-Canavan suffered from post-partum depression following her second child. However, unlike many, she realized that writing and working creatively could possibly stifle the growing depression — and maybe even have a jab at more formally using her writing skills. Following stints of writing about the stresses of parenting through blogging, her work was eventually discovered by a popular Moms website, where she is now a featured columnist.

Even more importantly, her two children — Summer Rainbow, named after her Kauai birthplace, is 3 and Ely Finn just turned one in October — inspired her to write a children’s book entitled, “Thank You For Coming To Me, Baby Brother,” inspired by a scene on her house floor between the two siblings.

That book is now a finalist in the MeeGenius! contest, based out of New York City publishing house MeeGenius!. Her work, if she wins, will be distributed digitally via iPad, iPhone, Android, online, and through other digital outlets — and even better, on top of her award money, MeeGenius! will donate a plethora of books to a LBUSD school library.
