For 31-year-old David Woods, music wasn’t something he really set out to do. Instead, he filled his years in a totally different career—as a geologist.

At 21, he began recording and making his own beats, and music began slowly taking over his life. But he’d yet to quit his day job.

“I think music was always calling me and enchanting me,” said Woods, a Long Beach resident. “I think it was only a matter of time before it took over my life and consumed my existence. Working in the field of geology really was not a fit for me. I felt like it was just something I was doing while I could get better at making recordings.”

That’s when Woods adopted the name Deedub, taking inspiration for his hip-hop sounds from the likes of Nas and Common to rock outfits like Metallica and Nirvana. Lately, though, Deedub said reggae and reggae-influenced artists such as Bob Marley, Slightly Stoopid and Sublime have shaped his sound.

Deedub’s love of reggae is obvious on tracks like “In the Heart of the Sun,” “Pure Love” and “Liberation,” which are all available on Spotify.

While geology didn’t end up working out for Deedub as a career, he said his experience with it, like helping with multiple large-scale building projects in Las Vegas, has helped his music.

“Studying the earth reveals a lot about the subtle nature of things, existence and the laws which govern processes,” he said. “It really helped my mind to expand and think in terms of billions of years. A lot of the things I learned from geology have become part of the fabric of my lyrics.”

Deedub said he adopted a lyrical theme of enjoying life.

“Lyrically, I get inspired by my excitement to create something new,” he said. “Before I begin making a song, I like to get myself amped up similar to an athlete before a game. I like to imagine the song in its complete form and the feeling which it will convey. I’m inspired to share good feelings with people.”

Deedub, who is now a musician full-time and runs his own label, Deedub Records, will perform with KLB at Boardner’s, located at 1652 North Cherokee Avenue in Los Angeles, on February 22. Tickets are $15 by clicking here.
