It was only a matter of time before the lead singer of Scottish indie get-up Belle and Sebastian made a musical. And leave it to the Long Beach Cinematheque to not only gather up a flock of Long Beach musicians to pay tribute to the band and film, but screen God Help the Girl at their Santa Ana theatre, The Frida.

What began as a series of songs released in 2009, Stuart Murdoch has turned into what is now the feature-length musical God Help the Girl. Taking on both writing and directing roles, Murdoch premiered the film earlier this year at Sundance and calls it an ode to Glasgow, the home of Belle and Sebastian.

Screen Shot 2014-09-02 at 12.00.44 PMTelling the story of 18-year-old Eve as she escapes a psychiatric ward and discovers her love of music, the nearly two-hour visual symphony was honored with a world cinema award at Sundance as well as being recognized as one of the best films at the Berlin International Film Festival.

  • Aeron Archaumbault
