Long Beach’s Labor Day weekend music scene is a testament to the city’s growing support for outdoor music, bringing the city together for the sake of good sound. Braving the summer’s last hurrah of a heat wave and the perspiring crowd to hear George Clinton and Parliament Funkadelic headline Funk Fest is worth every penny and every drop of sweat.
Coinciding with the 2014 Summer and Music Series (SAM), The Queen Mary is presenting Shoreline Jam, August 30 and 31, followed by the sixth annual Long Beach Funk Fest on September 1. Single-day tickets for the two-day Shoreline Jam festival will go on sale August 1 and single day tickets for the Long Beach Funk Fest are currently on sale.
Shoreline Jam’s new two-day festival format will surely fill your Labor Day weekend dance card, with a blend of rock, hip-hop and reggae music. On Saturday, August 30, Brewfish will jump start the first day of the festival at 12:00PM, followed by Krooked Treez at 1:15PM, The Originalites at 2:30PM, C Money and The Players at 4:00PM, The Aggrolites at 5:30PM, The Grouch & Eligh at 7:00PM, Stick Figure at 8:30PM and finally The Dirty Heads will take the stage at 10:00PM.
Sunday, August 31, Jet West will start the day at 12:00PM, followed by The Simpkin Project at 12:45PM, Ethan Tucker at 2:15PM, The Expanders at 3:45PM, and returing act Seedless at 5:15PM. J Boog returns to Shoreline Jam with his irresistible soul-reggae at 6:45PM, followed by the upbeat reggae stylings of Collie Buddz at 8:15PM. To cap off the festival, world-renowned reggae rockers Pepper return to the festival to headline day two at 10:00PM.
Get down at The Long Beach Funk Fest on Monday, September 1 with the festival’s groove-inducing tradition of inspiring a city-wide dance epidemic. “Sustaining Our Future Through Funk” will be held at The Queen Mary’s Waterfront Park. George Clinton and Parliament Funkadelic will headline the 6th annual event, joined by world-renowned funk artists Karl Denson’s Tiny Universe, Katdelic, The Meters Experience featuring Leo Nocentelli, Delta Nove, Brasil Baile Funk with Gisella, Sea Funk Brass Band, MC Rickey Vincent and additional artists that have yet to be announced. Mix it up with dance performances and live art, and a visit to the Kid’s Zone of Funkativity.
