Virtually Pets
Love to post updates like this. Last week’s Pet Post featured two good doggies up for adoption. The two Chihuahuas from Long Beach Animal Care Services, Addison and a tripod named Manita, got adopted before we could schlep them down to Pet Food Express’s monthly adoption event. So we brought down three more. They would have been featured in this week’s Pet Projects, but one went to a rescue and the other two, including the best boxer I’ve ever met, both went home.
Most of the people in the animal community work with one another, which goes so far in finding permanent homes for pets. One group in particular, LiveLove Pet Care and Rescue, networks everywhere and with everyone. They were at Pet Food Express last Saturday with their own dogs and a kissing booth.
No telling who’s happier–volunteer Darlene or this little guy! Photo by Kate Karp
The founder, Emily Ann Ghosh (she was a 40 Under 40 honoree); her husband, Sam; and volunteers Darlene, Faye and Leslie found a rescue for one of the dogs and likely would have placed the boxer had not a passerby seen him first.
To return the favor as best as I can, here are a few dogs they mentor. Thanks, LiveLove!

Bella is a street rescue. Here’s her story: “She’s had a rough life—overbred, underfed and lacking a soft, warm bed for her entire life. She was found by our friends at Pawsitively Long Beach, and along with the Animal Resource Team (ART), we rallied to take her into rescue. Bella is staying is Howllywood with a rad new foster mom. We are eager to see this girl regain her strength and help her adjust to the rescue life with ease.”
As you can see, Bella does ironing as well. She accepts payment in snuggles and treats.
Pupp-eeeeez! As foster mom Faye says, “who can really be sad when looking at these precious faces?” If you are ready for unconditional love, puppy kisses and lots of personality, contact us!

Animals for Armed Forces Special Adoption Event
Friday–Sunday, various locations, times depend on shelter hours
No parking fees for shelter visitors
What better way to show unconditional love to one of our brave service people and veterans than through a pet? The County of Los Angeles Department of Animal Care and Control (DACC) and spcaLA are teaming up with the Animals for Armed Forces Foundation to provide free adoptions for veterans, reserves, active-duty service members and immediate family members this Veterans Day weekend. These veterans as well as immediate family member with proper identification will be able to adopt a pet at any DACC animal care center or spcaLA for free (licensing fee costs and trust fees may apply). Disabled veterans will receive reduced rates on license fees, which will also be available following the conclusion of this special weekend adoption event.
“I am honored to be working with Animals for Armed Forces Foundation on this special adoption event this Veterans Day weekend as a way to celebrate, thank, and honor all our service members,” DACC Director Marcia Mayeda said.
“It is said that a pet is medication without side effects and I can’t agree more,” added Stephanie Stone, I have seen first-hand the results that service animals or emotional support animals have on veterans, through love, encouragement, and sometime a helping paw,” said Stephanie Stone, County of Los Angeles Department of Military and Veterans Affairs Chief Deputy Director. “Many veterans struggling with PTSD have reported that it was their pets that saved them from becoming a heartbreaking statistic.”
DACC and spcaLA have a number of locations throughout LA County, including Long Beach. For information, click the links next to the organizations’ names.
