Eye problems are very common in animals. There might be a problem only with the eyes, or the eyes could be an indication of a problem elsewhere that is showing some effects on the eyes. Since the eye is an important and sensitive organ, an exam is warranted if your pet has any of the following symptoms.

  • Squinting
  • Pawing at them
  • Rubbing the face on the ground
  • Redness
  • Discharge

What diseases can cause these problems? Here are the more common eye problems we encounter at the Long Beach Animal Hospital:

  • Infection: Many different bacteria and viruses can affect the eye.
  • Foreign bodies: Plant material like foxtails (plant awns) can embed themselvesunder the eyelids or under the nictitating membrane (third eyelid).
  • Ulcer: This is an erosion of the cornea. Infections and trauma are the more common causes, although other diseases not seen so commonly, like glaucoma, can cause an ulcer.

Other symptoms to watch for:

  • Swollen eye, which can be caused by glaucoma or trauma.
  • Change in color of the iris, which could indicate a cancerous process.
  • Pupils of different diameters, which could indicate a neurologic problem.
