2:00pm | Editor’s Note: This is an expansion on our print coverage of the Best of Long Beach. Given our limited print space, we wanted to further share our experience at these amazing businesses via the many photos we took. We feel it not only allows the reader to better understand why each place was chosen, but provides the chance to spotlight local businesses visually. We will do one business every day until all 30 winners have been covered. Enjoy.
Best Sunday Funday: Gallagher’s
Sunday Funday. It’s a staple of a phrase amongst the new generation that relegates the end-of-the-weekend debauchery to the a.m. — all under many excuses: hair of the dog from the previous evening, work the following day, or simply, “It’s five o’clock somewhere.”
Either way, Gallagher’s has Sunday Funday down. In fact, be prepared to stretch your vocal cords in order to be heard because – quite literally – unless you come early, you’ll be waiting for a standing room, let a lone a seat. However, despite the chaos of pints of beer, plates of food, and sports games surrounding you via televisions plastered onto every wall, you’ll be greeted and welcomed like everyone would like to: with a warm smile and a “Whattya need?”
Erin Edmonds, the owner of Gallagher’s who happened to have the flu that Sunday, made sure we were taken care of despite the craziness – and it was Mandie Ireton, the manager, who executed it rather flawlessly. Talk about a woman with backbone: she, like ALL the incredible servers, could seemingly run with a hand tied behind her back — all the while chit chatting, pouring beer, cleaning up, smiling, and stretching on the side in one fell swoop. Admirable and adorable, this is the kind of neighborhood joint that makes one happy to be Irish – even if it’s just for a few hours.
And even better: you got yourself some bottomless mimosas until 2pm to chant, cheer, boo, and relish in the sports games on TV or the drinking games on tables.
