For some, it sounded like a joke (after all, it was pointed out that one can easily go see such a rock, albeit uncovered and surrounded by other rocks, in its natural habitat). Many were excited for the rock, as was displayed by the popular Bixby Knolls Rock Party that took the term “rock” to a hyperbolic level (rock music, rocky road ice cream, even apparently oversized paper and scissors).

But for those who were in the area of impact by the gigantic mass moving through Long Beach, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA) is doing something rather considerate: they’re letting you go see it for free the entire week of June 24 to July 1. In fact, every community in which the 340-ton rock — part of artist Michael Heizer’s Levitated Mass piece — passed through can visit the rock and the museum gratis.

All you need is proof of residence (for those in the other districts, well… Borrow one? It’s not fraud if you’re just borrowing it, right?).
