TUESDAY, JAN. 7

Joining Long Beach’s extensive open mic circuit is a new showcase, We Can Do It! where every second Tuesday of the month, a woman-focused, feminist, LGBTQ-friendly performance atmosphere will land at Downtown Long Beach’s Rosie the Riveter-inspired drinkery, the Elinor, which is arguably, already a woman-focused, feminist, LGBTQ-friendly performance atmosphere, so it’s fitting.

Tonight, hear from featured guest Blues singer, musician, poet and spoken word artist (what can’t she do?!) Shylah Ada (Shy But Flyy) and TEDx Talk speaker and poet Tiffany Dawn Hasse, among open mic night performances. The show’s host, singer/songwriter Melissa Lussier, said the event is “all about empowerment,” that all expressions of creativity and gender are welcome.

For those interested in performing, please send an email to Lussier at [email protected] with a short bio and a link to your work. No experience necessary. You can also sign up the day of at 6 p.m.

Another great thing: Artist Nadia Alamah will be brandishing a brush tonight to the performances, or “live painting” as it’s called. We’re very into how this sunflower piece is coming along.

Giving us a moment’s pause: If you have yet to see Hasse’s TEDx Talk, then dive into the mind of the poet below, where Hasse discusses how she turned her struggle with OCD into an art.

We Can Do It! open mic runs 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. at Elinor; 250 N. Tribune Ct. For more info, click here
