Vince Staples will be producing and starring in his own scripted comedy series on Netflix, the streaming giant announced today.
The comedy series titled, “The Vince Staples Show” will be loosely based on the rapper’s life and set in Long Beach. Staples was born in Compton but grew up in the Ramona Park area of North Long Beach, which has been the backdrop and inspiration for many of his creative works, including his most recent album “Ramona Park Broke My Heart.”
Few details were available about the show, but according to an interview with Grammy.com last year, Staples said the show is based on two vignettes he released on Youtube in 2019 under the same name.
“[We’re] just trying to go off of those and turn them into a 30-minute show,” Staples told Grammy.com.
A release date for “The Vince Staples Show” hasn’t yet been announced.
Staples will executive produce the show alongside “Black-ish” creator Kenya Barris. The series also boasts Corey Smyth and Calmatic as executive producers with showrunners Ian Edelman and Maurice Williams, who worked alongside Barris on Kid Cudi’s upcoming animated show Entergalactic.
The show will be Staples’ biggest acting role to date, but it will not mark his first on-screen appearance, with credits including brief roles in the film “Dope,” a cameo in an episode of “Insecure,” and voice acting credits as the title character in the Adult Swim animated series “Lazor Wulf.”
It’s further evidence that Staples is claiming space outside of the music industry. In May, the artist released his first graphic novel “Limbo Beach” about supernaturally gifted teenagers on a journey to rule and discover the secrets of an abandoned amusement park.
His release event in Long Beach, which was slated to happen at El Dorado Park, was canceled due to capacity concerns.
