Don’t let the chilly weather, Friday the 13th or the predicted Sunday showers keep you indoors. If you muster up a bit of motivation, it’s sure to go a long way with HUSTLE, the inaugural three-day Long Beach music festival, set to pop off at 4th Street Vine, as well as several other Saturday shindigs, including one Long Beach artist selling her one-of-a-kind wares.
If you have to miss out on something this weekend, don’t let it be HUSTLE, the inaugural Long Beach music festival set to showcase the city’s wildly talented community of music makers. Set over a three-day period (making it so, so hard to miss), HUSTLE 2015 will feature a diverse crew of nearly 30 locally cultured acts from Porch Party Records, Long Beach Music Collective, Falling Mirrors Collective and Ghoulhouse Records, including a few from Los Angeles.
The festival kicks off tonight with its opening party at 4th Street Vine, featuring a mashup of the city’s up and coming hip-hop and DJ scene.
Sky Blue Sea at CSULB Beach Auditorium
Craving a quiet night in but don’t necessarily want to be alone? If you’re even somewhat interested in Long Beach’s backstory, head on over to CSULB tonight for a strong dose of the city’s naval and aviation history, a rich storyline told via Sky Blue Sea, history buff Dave Kelly’s latest documentary work. The hour-long film starts with President Woodrow Wilson’s decision to base the pacific Battle Fleet in San Pedro Bay in 1919, a power move that branded Long Beach as a navy town for years to come.
Free Zumba in the 6th District
In the wise words of Councilman Dee Andrews, “To stay fit, we must move the body;” a statement ready to serve as inspiration to get you to take part in the free Zumba classes to be hosted at the Ernest S. McBride Park Gym in the 6th District. Two classes will be held on Saturday: one at 11:00AM and one at 12:15PM. So, if you’re looking to bust a few fun moves and burn some calories before the Thanksgiving chow-down begins, now is your chance.
Check out ArtExchange’s fundraising sale (ArtXwalk Bazaar) on Saturday from 4:00PM to 10:00PM, set to showcase a hodge podge of creative little doodads you can bring home to your family, give to your friends or hang on your wall. As the local art center prepares for building repairs, the event seeks to raise funds for its future.
“The evening at ArtExchange will be an experimental market and [the] beginning of what we hope to nurture into a regular happening with the excitement of a pop-up festival and the oddness of a sideshow,” said Nicole Franco, one of the bazaar’s producers, in a statement.
Produced and curated in collaboration with Mish Mash, Bunny and Wolf, Heading Home Music and ArtExchange, the event will bring together over 15 vintage, art and handmade vendors showcasing their best buys. So head over to check out the live art, vinyl records, vintage clothing, handcrafted jewelry, home decor and more.
After you’ve swung by ArtExchange, don’t forget to stop by the Institute for Labor Generosity Workers and Uniforms kitty corner on Elm Avenue, where textile artist Frau Fiber will be selling from her archive of past production. Get your hands on one-of-a-kind Ghanian articles, refashioned hats, aprons, dresses, uniforms and more.
Frau Fiber (Carole Frances Lung’s altar ego) received one of the five Professional Artist Fellowships dolled out this year to local working artists by the Arts Council for Long Beach. She has worked in the garment industry for 14 years and works as an Assistant Art Professor in the Department of Art, Fashion and Textile at California State University Los Angeles.
If you can’t make the Saturday sale, another will be held on Saturday, December 12 or you can call and make an appointment (info included in link).
